In his famous experiment, Ivan Pavlov noticed dogs began to salivate in response to a tone after the sound had repeatedly been paired with presenting food. Pavlov quickly realized that this was a learned response and set out to further investigate the conditioning process. Classical conditioning is a process that involves creating an association between a naturally existing stimulus and a previously neutral one. Sounds confusing, but lets break it down: The classical conditioning process involves pairing a previously neutral stimulus (such as the sound of a bell) with an unconditioned stimulus (the taste of food). This unconditioned stimulus naturally and automatically triggers salivating as a response to the food, which is known as the unconditioned response. After associating the neutral stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus, the sound of the bell alone will start to evoke salivating as a response. The sound of the bell is now known as the conditioned stimulus and salivating in response to the bell is known as the conditioned response. Imagine a dog that salivates when it sees food. The animal does this automatically. He does not need to be trained to perform this behavior; it simply occurs naturally. The food is the naturally occurring stimulus. If you started to ring a bell every time you presented the dog with food, an association would be formed between the food and the bell. Eventually the bell alone, a.k.a. the conditioned stimulus, would come to evoke the salivation response. Classical conditioning is much more than just a basic term used to describe a method of learning; it can also explain how many behaviors form that can impact your health. When you drive through towns and different communities, one can see signs for soup kitchens, volunteer services, etc. There is something about the idea of giving back to others that is not only for the one receiving, but also beneficial to the one doing the work behind it. There once was a movie called ââ¬Å"Pay it forwardâ⬠about the whole idea of doing something for someone with the only stipulation being to do something for someone else. Once, Oprah did a show on random acts of kindness and the reactions of those receiving these acts. Currently, it is the holiday season and it might be safe to assume that these acts of kindness might be more in the making. Some of these acts could include carrying someoneââ¬â¢s groceries to their car, buying someone a cup of coffee at the local convenience store, or even paying someoneââ¬â¢s check at a restaurant. Personally, one of my favorite things to do is pay the toll for multiple cars on one of our major highways. I enjoy this most because I am unable to see their reactions and I hope that they would ââ¬Å"pay it forwardâ⬠also essay writers online. In an article titled ââ¬Å"Re-Establishing Altruism As a Viable Social Normâ⬠(2011), it is stated that ââ¬Å"people are generally keen to promote well-being of others, and a new generation is working as volunteers far more than their parents ever didâ⬠. This might be attributed to the idea that today needs are met with less struggle than in years past or that this ââ¬Å"new generation is discovering the tremendous value of making a real contribution to the lives of othersâ⬠. Another article in Psychology Today suggests that ââ¬Å"acting with an unselfish regard for others doesnââ¬â¢t always come naturally, even though many psychologists believe weââ¬â¢re hard-wired for empathyâ⬠. And the final thought from this same article states that ââ¬Å"most of us realize that when we make an effort to give without expectations of reciprocity, we feel fulfilled and energizedâ⬠. So if this is the new idea behind our everyday, the world might not be doomed! I often feel that we are becoming more of a society that is all about themselves and what can be gained at anyoneââ¬â¢s expense.
